RH Classes Duckling

Autumn Term 2018-19

Our new Ducklings have made a fantastic start to school life and we are having so much fun this term learning about The Gruffalo and other stories by Julia Donaldson!

We have had a great time dressing up and acting out the stories of The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child, building caves for the Gruffalo on our welly walks and getting crafty making owl puppets and Gruffalo masks. As we learn to hold our pencils carefully and write some letters, we have been labelling the Gruffalo in his cave and we made some delicious treats, baking Gruffalo crumble and making owl ice-cream and scrambled snake! Our snack times have also included purple prickles (watermelon), poisonous warts (green grapes), terrible tusks (bread sticks) and orange eyes (mini cheddars) which we have shared out with our friends, looked at the shapes and used to compare size and length!

Our learning inspired by the story The Smartest Giant in Town included designing new vests for George, painted and printed with shapes, patterns and numbers, reading speech bubbles and matching them to the characters and making delicious treats in the mud kitchen for a party to celebrate George’s kindness! In Mindfulness, we listened to music and learned about musicians who have shown kindness in some way which ranged from Dolly Parton with her book scheme for children across the world to Andrew Lloyd Webber who supports children through music!

Whilst learning about Zog, the dragon who never gave up even when things were tricky, we listened to music by artists who have overcome difficulties, thought about reasons we are all stars and invited lots of our parents into class to talk to us about their jobs! Zog became a flying ambulance but our visitors ranged from farmers to librarians, all of which were really exciting to find out about!

The best thing about this term so far has been the new friendships that have been developed as we all start a new school and the way we have all settled into routines, explored our learning areas and built relationships with our Year 6 buddies who have been amazing at helping us to feel happy and confident in school! We are looking forward to the rest of the term and the fun that we are going to have!
