Curriculum Phonics

The carefully planned school's skills based, thematic curriculum, ensures all aspects of the new national curriculum programmes of study are taught and provides a wealth of enrichment and extra-curricular activities. Strong links between subjects and enterprise projects have been established, which provide a wealth of opportunities for pupils to apply key literacy and numeracy skills across the curriculum and in real-life contexts. Phonics Bug and Jolly Phonics programmes have been used to support the teaching of phonics in the infants. Both programmes support fun, active teaching of synthetic phonics and set our pupils on the path to a lifelong love of reading. Phonics is taught daily for at least 20 minutes by all classes in the infants with children grouped carefully depending on their development stage. This enables all pupils to make rapid progress. At the end of Year 1, the percentage of pupils attaining the expected standard in the statutory phonics check is consistently above the National average. Pupil questionnaires show children feel they have ownership over the curriculum as their ideas and suggestions are included in planning. The quality of the curriculum is reflected in the very high standards of attainment and achievement of our pupils across the school.
